Bullying, Cyberbullying and Mental Health.

Bullying can have a devastating effect on mental health. People that already have mental issues or a condition that makes them ultrasensitive like Aspergers can sustain lasting damage from it. The pain of childhood bullying can follow a person well into adulthood. It can cause them to become introverted and affect their ability to perform with society and in the work place. It isn’t just kids teasing. Some of it is bordering on criminal behavior and unlike in the past the victim cannot escape. It is done everywhere. Social media while being a positive force also makes it possible for a person to be bullied 24/7. Never escaping. Imagine for a moment you are the victim. Every waking moment someone is tearing you down. Shredding your self esteem. With social media it can become like a witch hunt with keyboard warriors joining in the attack.

bullying and mental issues

Cyberbullying happens every day and every moment someone is a victim. There are those that do it as a sport, to make themselves seem better and bigger when all they are is small minded and mean. They ruin reputations and relationships with lies. They destroy careers and the work of years to build a life. Some will stop at nothing even making false police reports or statements about someone’s work or business or worse their sex life. About the only thing you can do is to report it to the social media or block the person saying such things. You cannot recover from the damage as it stays on the internet and is very difficult to remove.

Monitor your children on the internet. There should be no privacy where it is concerned. Bullies and perverts are every where looking for victims. Your kids may not like it but put the computer in a place where you can see what they are doing. You are their protector not their pal. If your child shows signs of being bullied such as less interest in social activities, isolation or change in personality including becoming more aggressive talk to them.

Talk about the dangers on line. You wouldn’t let them dial random numbers on the phone and talk to strangers this is the same thing. Explain to them that bullying is wrong and only people that are lacking do it. If someone is being bullied look at the bullys perhaps they could be the next victim. Love them enough to show them the path. You may uncover that they are a victim and be able to help.

  1. We are being stalked currently. And it is never okay and it makes me very fearful for my young sons as to the world they are entering. I used to be a teacher and used to collect all phones at the start of the day and hand them out when they went home because it pervades everything. We will really have to think about what we let our sons have and do where the internet is concerned. Thanks for the article. A very important topic.

    1. I am glad it helped. Too many parents just let their kids on the internet unsupervised. People also post pictures publicly of their children this is not a good thing to do. There was a woman on the news whose toddler’s picture was stolen and the person put them on their Facebook page as theirs. Pretty creepy.
